The Truth About Staying Consistent When It Feels Pointless

Have you ever poured time, effort, and heart into something… and still felt like you were going nowhere?  You’re not alone. And more importantly — you’re not doing it wrong.

The Gold Rush Lesson: Why Most People Quit Too Soon

During the Colorado Gold Rush, a man named R.U. Darby and his uncle struck gold. They were ecstatic. They bought equipment, dug in, and started extracting ore. But then… the gold disappeared.

They kept going for a while, but when nothing showed up, they gave up.  They sold their equipment and the land to a junk man.

But that junk man didn’t just start digging randomly. He hired a mining engineer, studied the land, and discovered something shocking:

R.U. Darby had quit just three feet from one of the richest gold veins in Colorado.

The junk man kept digging and went on to make millions.

The Valley of Disappointment: Why You’re Closer Than You Think

We all have moments where we feel like quitting. When results don’t match our efforts, it feels pointless.

James Clear calls this the Plateau of Latent Potential in his book Atomic Habits.

Here’s what it looks like:

  • You put in effort.
  •
  • You expect immediate results.
  •
  • But reality doesn’t work like that.

Instead, you hit the Valley of Disappointment — that stretch of time where the work you’re doing isn’t producing visible results… yet.

But is that work wasted?

No.

That effort is being stored.  In nature, drops of water can carve through stone — but it’s not just the last drop that does it.  It’s every drop that came before it.

Trust the Process, Not the Outcome

Bill Walsh, legendary coach of the San Francisco 49ers, understood this better than anyone.

In 1979, the 49ers were one of the worst teams in the league.  Walsh’s philosophy?

“The score takes care of itself.”

He focused on habits, preparation, standards — not on the scoreboard.

Two years later, they won the Super Bowl.  And under his leadership, they won three in total.

Walsh knew what most people forget:  If you get the process right, the results will follow.

Big Wins Are Built by Celebrating Small Wins

If you’re only waiting for big milestones to celebrate, you’ll burn out before you ever get there.

When you finish something hard — even if no one sees it, even if it didn’t work — that’s proof that you’re becoming who you’re meant to be.

Celebrate that.

  • Grab your favorite coffee.
  •
  • Watch a show you love, guilt-free.
  •
  • Put on your favorite album and just enjoy the moment.

It’s not about being loud. It’s about honoring the effort.

The more you celebrate showing up, the more likely you are to do it again tomorrow.
